Lunar calendar: today's moon phase, and what each phase is good for

Taroim's lunar calendar shows the real moon phase for today, calculated the same way an astronomical almanac does it, how much of the moon is illuminated, and the phases coming up next. For each of the eight phases it adds what folk tradition says about it: good days for plans, new beginnings and haircuts.

What you see

  1. Today's phase and the percentage of the moon that is illuminated.
  2. The phases coming up, with their dates.
  3. What the current phase is traditionally good for.

The eight moon phases

  • New Moon: Energy at its quietest point. Good for setting an intention or starting something small and private, not yet for acting on it out loud. Traditionally not a haircut day, more for planting the idea than cutting anything.
  • Waxing Crescent: The first real push of growing light. A good moment for the first concrete step on whatever got set at the new moon. Folk tradition says a haircut now helps hair grow back faster and thicker.
  • First Quarter: A natural tension point, small obstacles and decisions tend to surface. Better for pushing through resistance than for waiting for it to clear on its own.
  • Waxing Gibbous: Momentum builds toward the full moon. A good stretch for refining what's already started rather than launching something new. Haircuts still lean toward encouraging growth.
  • Full Moon: Energy and emotions run at their peak, and whatever's already in motion tends to come to a head. Better for finishing, celebrating or releasing something than for beginning it.
  • Waning Gibbous: The light starts pulling back. A natural time for gratitude and for tying up loose ends from whatever the full moon brought to a head.
  • Last Quarter: Another tension point, this one about letting go rather than pushing forward. Good for clearing out what isn't needed anymore.
  • Waning Crescent: The quietest stretch before the next new moon. Better for rest and reflection than for new plans. Folk tradition says a haircut now slows regrowth, useful if you want a style to last longer.
